History

This amazing deciduous climbing vine got its Chinese name (běi wǔ wèi zi, literally "northern five-flavor berry") from the fact that its berries possess all five basic flavors: salty, sweet, sour, pungent (spicy) and bitter. To eat one berry is quite an experience! Because it has all the tastes, it benefits the five yin organs : liver, kidneys, heart, lungs and spleen.

 

Traditional uses

It is considered one of the 50 fundamental herbs of the traditional Chinese herbology.

Schisandra is a wonderful adaptogen that has been used for over 2000 years to prolong life, to retard the aging process, to increase energy, as a fatigue-fighter, as a immune and sexual tonic.

It reduces stress, both mental and physical. It possesses significant protective antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity.Thus it helps to maintain healthy cells throughout the body.

It is considered one of the most highly protective of all medicinal plants (it offers first-rate hepatoprotective benefits), and the berry is included in many traditional herbal formulas for improving energy and mental health. Its main constitutives are schisandrin B, gomisans and schisandrol A. It has high contains of essential oils and vitamin C.
