Family: Aquifoliaceae

Origin: Ecuador

Guayusa has been used by the Ecuadorian indigenous people for many years. It’s ritually used each morning for its energizing, invigorating and tonic effects. At other places, such as with the Kichwa people, Guayusa is ceremonially drunk as a tradition of storytelling, music and learning. It's a socializing ceremony all centered around a large pot of boiling Guayusa over a fire. Ilex Guayusa, a tree of the holy genus, is a relative to the most commonly known Ilex Paraguariensis (Yerba Mate).

Ilex Guayusa is a great stimulant of the mind and the body; it improves concentration, focus and is a general tonic. It’s a very nutritious plant. It is one of the plant containing the most caffeine on the planet (3-5% dry weight). Like Yerba mate, it produces a pleasant stimulation without any of the irritating side-effects from other sources of caffeine such as coffee. Guayusa's unique mix of caffeine, theophylline and theobromine is what gives the balanced energy effect accompanied by well-being and warmth sensations and without any jitters, crash, or jolted buzz.

Moreover, Guayusa contains a high amount of anti-oxydants (1950 ORAC values for 1 cup; which is 1,6 times more than green tea), polyphenols, flavonoids and saponins. It also contains an important quantity of vitamins (C,D), essential minerals (Potassium, Magnesium, Calcium, Zinc, Chromium) and contains all 15 essential amino acids (including high amounts of Leucine).

Guayusa is almost known for its dreaming aid properties; it helps remember dreams, and to make more vivid and lucid dreams. It’s also used by some curanderos in South America as an ayahuasca admixture to improve taste, courage and energy.

Nowadays Guayusa is being studied for its medicinal properties and has been shown to be an aphrodisiac, stimulant, antimalarial, liver tonic and syphilis symptoms reliever.
